magazine names

I like the Q magazine name style because it is really bold. But i also like the font used for Vogue because it is so recognizable. however i think considering my magazine is aimed at a relatively young audience, a more lively and exciting font would be more appropriate.

NEW MAGAZINE NAME.

my new idea for my music/surf magazine is to call it 'CATCH'.
I have downloaded a font which i like that could be used for my title.

Magazine Name...

These are some of the fonts i was trying out for my title...

I asked some of my friends to look at this title, but they commented that they
liked it but wouldn't buy it because they wouldn't want to read only about in
die music, which is what the title suggests would be in the magazine.
I decided i needed to change my ideas slightly. This is when i decided to think about what type of audiences there were out there for magazines.
Having looked a lot at 'carve magazine' I found that surf magazines in certain areas such as jersey have a high readership. Because my interviews for my double page sp
reads had a lot of mention of surfing i thought i could do a music magazine for people who like to surf. I haven't seen it done before but i think it could really work. In jersey i know alot of people who surf. I asked if they listened to music alot and what kind. I found that they actually all said they listened alot and the genres they liked were- Accoustic, Rock and Indie mostly.

My second photo shoot...
My favourite photo of laura, which i want to edit and then use for a double page somehow. The background needs editing on photoshop because it looks messy.

Fonts...

Im about to do write up my interviews and I'm deciding on fonts to use when i put them in my magazine.

These are some of the fonts that I thought i could use throughout my magazine. Obviously the text would stay the same all the way through to keep a theme going and make it recognisable.

Double page background images ...

Im now thinking about the type of images that will look good as background images in my magazine...
I really like this image  because of the free space around the main focus of the image where the text could go. E.g. on the grassy bit some white text could look good.

I like this image i took at the Grass Roots music festival because i like the way the wall goes diagonally across it and the free space it leaves in the bottom right hand corner for possible writing. Also it is the kind of image i may use in my final magazine because the setting looks right.

I like this image because of the colours and it would really stand out in a magazine. Some white text would look really good over this picture.

I also like this image, from Jersey Live, because of the free space at the top. A mixture of light and dark text in maybe two columns per page (which would be four over the whole picture) could look good over this image.

This is my favourite image because of the colours and I think a title in light text would look good in the bottom left hand corner and black text for the article over the sky and sea in about 4 columns would look really effective.

Double Page Layouts...

I really like this double page spread because i like the way the picture at the top is links between both pages, showing that it is all one article and it looks really good. I think the way the 3 column rule has been used is really effective because of the variations on it they have included. The bigger writing in pink going across two columns, makes the page more interesting and breaks up all the writing. I also really like the way the third column on the first page is half little pictures and then a thinner column of writing that variation also adds interest.
I like this one because the big picture looks really good and you can still see the layout being used on this page, although there is only 2 columns of writing they are in the same place that they are in the rest of the article. This also helps with linking the two pages together into the same article and the continuity of the colours also keeps the theme going effectively.

Double Page Layouts...

While im making sketches of layouts and thinking of a name for my magazine i am still looking at magazines and i have found some double page spreads that i really like.

The one at the top is using a four column per page rule but grouping two columns on one side and two on the other making it look like a two column layout. This means that in a magazine that uses 2 columns this wouldn't look out of place.  And the other two are using two columns which i think looks really good. I'm going to try to to find some other examples of some different, less common, types of grid systems.

NME covers...

NME is a really popular magazine for music fans of my age, particularly those into indie and alternative music. Obviously it is really important that the cover is appealing to the target audience and it must be considering NME is one of the biggest selling music magazines.
So i am going to look at some NME covers and decide what makes it suitable for the intended audience and what makes it successful in drawing in new readers.

I have found that, compared to Mojo magazine covers NME covers are alot more colourful and less symetrical and organised looking. This makes them look a bit less sophisticated but they look more fun and i think this is important when aiming at the 15-20 age range. The covers also feature much more up-to-date names such as Panic at the Disco and The Wombats which is going to appeal more to the younger audience. Two of the covers also say 'Glasto' on them which is the name that mainly younger people give the Glastonbury music festival. Younger people are also more likely to be interested in music festivals and so this will be eye catching to this age range.
All of the covers also feature many other well known band names to younger audiences. The covers also feature well known up-to-date faces in the music industry which will be recognised by this age range. The cover pictures are also busier and more fun looking which is far more likely to be appealing to 15-20 year-olds.

Target Audience...

I have just been searching target audiences for music magazines and i have found out that...
KERRANG- Metal/Nu metal/ Screamo
NME- Indie/Nu Rave/Alternative (and new bands)
Mojo- 35-55 year old music fan
So i am going to buy a NME magazine to look through and refer to when making my magazine.

Target Audience...

Today we started talking about thinking of names for our music magazines.
To think of a suitable name i need to take into account my target audience.
My target audience is 15-20 year olds and the genre would be indie/acoustic.
I am going to make a brainstorm of name ideas. I think it would be really good to have a name that could be abbreviated and be really memorable.
I also need to do some research into what an audience of this age range wants to see and read about and what would catch their attention on a front cover etc.

Mojo Magazine Covers...

Here are some of the Mojo covers which I particularly liked.
I chose them because they stood out to me. It is important that they stood out to me because a magazine cover needs to do this because it makes it more sellable.

They have used well known artists on their front cover because that always stand out to people and the names across the middle stand out.
The images are also quite striking. The black and white images stand out but the rainbow one also does because the colour has been used in an interesting way. So they stand out because the pictures are not in realistic colours like most magazine covers.

So these are the kind of things I may think about doing with any photos I take for my cover image;
  • Making them black and white
  • photoshopping colours over them

Music Magazine research...

I have been looking through music magazine websites such as :
  • NME
  • Mojo
  • Kerrang
  • The Wire
  • i-D
My favourite website was Mojo because I looked at a lot of the past covers and I thought they were more eye catching than any of the others. They were also more interesting and all the covers look very different.

Final Ideas...

Now I am starting to think about making my final magazine ideas.
I have already looked at some magazine covers and contents pages but I need to look at some more because I will be looking at them for different reasons. I am going to make a music magazine and the cover and contents pages will need to appeal to very different audience so it will need to be a very different style.

I need to make a :
  • front cover
  • contents page
  • double spread
  • any other pages
I will probably make a sort of indie music magazine because I really like some of the magazines I have looked at of this genre and also because some of my friends are in bands of this style who I can interview and take pictures of.

Making my contents page - text

This is my contents page so far...
I have copied the layout, sizes and colours of the text but changed what it actually says to make it relevant to my school magazine.

Now I need to take some pictures to put on the right hand side.

Monday, 20 October 2008

I have found this contents page and i think it would work really well for my school magazine contents page.

I like the bold images and the curved edges make it a bit more interesting. Also the writing is easy to read and straight forward, so finding the page you are looking for would be easy.

I will take some of my own photos and then try to make my own version of this page using photoshop.

Looking at contents pages

Now I need to make a contents page for my school magazine...

I have been looking on google for examples of contents pages I liked. These are some of them.
I chose them because the layouts are interesting and bold.
I don't think either of these would really work for a school magazine though. I think there should be some colour too because my front cover is colourful.

Making my Magazine cover - adding the image

Here is my final version of my JCG magazine cover, with the picture put in behind the text I had already made.

This is the picture I took of Jo and Claire for my magazine cover image.

Making my Magazine cover - text

For the past few lessons I have working on replicating the teen vogue cover that I chose, but using my own text ideas.
Today I have finished the layout of the cover, all I need to do now is take my own picture for the background.

I'm really pleased with the way I have been able to copy the layout so far because it looks really similar, although there were a few fonts which I could not find.

Looking at magazine covers

I have chosen these two Teen Vogue covers because i think that they would be really good examples to base the layout for my school magazine cover on.
My favourite one is the picture at the top, so i will try to replicate that layout using photoshop.

Wednesday, 8 October 2008

I have to make a JCG magazine cover. Today I have decided to look at front covers from Vogue instead of NME because I think the layouts will be more appropriate to copy, for a girls school magazine, because they are mostly smarter and simpler.

1.
2.I really prefer the first image to the second one although both of them are simple and effective. I think there are too many people in the second image which means it is not as striking.

I like the simplicity of the first picture as well as the colours. But for a school magazine i think it would be too close up so i need to look for a different cover to base mine on.

Monday, 6 October 2008

Today i was looking at front covers of music magazines. I was mainly looking at NME magazine.
I picked some of the pictures that i liked.

I like this picture because it is simple but effective. I think simple pictures on magazine covers can be more effective because they are bolder and more eye catching. It is also bold because it has only 3 main colours; black red and white.

I liked this picture for the same reasons. It has the same bold colour scheme and simple layout.
